How-to Compare Medicare Advantage Plans
It's important to evaluate plans by more than the carrier name and the monthly premium. We recommend taking inventory of your healthcare needs (e.g., doctor, specialists, medications, finances, etc.) to identify the most important benefits for you. If you need assistance choosing a plan, contact a Medicare AdviserMedicare insurance agent or call 1-800-MEDICARE.
One of the cost-saving benefits of Medicare Advantage, that many people overlook, is the Maximum Out-Of-Pocket spending limit (MOOP). MOOP puts a ceiling on your co-payments and co-insurance, and when it's reached, the plans picks up the rest. For 2019, MOOP is $6,700. This may sound like a lot, until you stop and realize that Original Medicare has no cap at all.
Plans can use the mandatory MOOP or a lower amount, down to the lower threshold of $3,401. So, people in Laramie County who traditionally have high out-of-pocket expenses can save a substantial amount of money by finding a plan with a lower MOOP, even if the plan's premium is up to $200 per month.
WARNING: If you see a doctor or specialist outside of the plan's network, you will fall under the guidelines of a combined MOOP (e.g., in-network and out of network), which can be up to $10,000.
If you are in a 2019 Medicare Advantage plan, the plan can raise your maximum out-of-pocket spending limit (MOOP) in 2019, however, your covered healthcare expenses cannot exceed $6,700 for in-network cost-sharing.
IMPORTANT: Be sure to read your Annual Notice of Change Letter to see if your MOOP increased. This information will help you determine how much you need to budget in 2019 for in-network Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B charges.
