Gerber Life Insurance Co offers 3 Medicare Supplemental Plans in Illinois. The benefit and coverage details are outlined below. You can learn more about Gerber Life on their website at http://www.gerberlife.com.
Medicare Supplement Plan A
This is the most basic supplement offered by Gerber Life Insurance Co. Plan A has the least coverage, but it covers the most risky gaps in Original Medicare. Here's what you get:
- Medicare Part A coinsurance payments up to an additional 365 days after Original Medicare benefits are exhausted
- Medicare Part B co-payment or coinsurance expenses, including preventative care coinsurance expenses
- The first three pints of blood used in a medical procedure
- Part A hospice care coinsurance expense or co-payment
CRITICAL: Plan A does not cover the Medicare Part A deductible. The Part A deductible is part of your hospitalization costs, Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) costs, hospice, and some home health care services. For this reason, this plan isn't appropriate for most people. In most cases a high-deductible Plan F or a plan that caps out-of-pocket expenses, like a Plan M or N, offers better overall coverage at a similar price.
IMPORTANT: Plan A is often confused with Medicare Part A, which is your hospital insurance.
Medicare Supplement Plan F
NOTE: Plan F will be phased out in 2020. If you buy Gerber Life Insurance Co's Plan F policy before January 1, 2020 you will be able to keep it.
Plan F is the most comprehensive supplement available in Illinois. Its coverage makes it the most popular plan, but it's also the costliest, and here's why. The Gerber Life Plan F makes sure that you have zero out-of-pocket costs. Pay your monthly premium and you're done. The plan takes care of all remaining doctor, specialist, lab, hospital, skilled nursing and home care costs.
With a Plan F policy, Gerber Life pays:
- Part A deductible
- Part B deductible
- Part B excess charges
- Preventative care Part B coinsurance
- Part A hospital and coinsurance costs up to an additional 356 days after Medicare benefits are exhausted
- Part B co-insurance or co-payment
- First three pints of blood used in an approved medical procedure (annually)
- Part A hospice care co-payment or coinsurance
- Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) coinsurance
- Foreign travel emergency
IMPORTANT: Other Gerber Life Insurance Co plans are available at a lower premium, but Plan F helps you eliminate high out-of-pocket costs.
NOTE: You must continue to pay your Medicare Part B premium, Part A premium (if you did not work for ten years or more), and your Medicare Part D premium for prescriptions.
Medicare Supplement Plan G
This plan is like Plan F. The difference is that Plan G does not pay the Medicare Part B deductible. For many people, particularly those who have chronic conditions and see their doctor frequently, a Plan C might be a better option.
Here's what the Gerber Life Insurance Co Plan C covers:
- Medicare Part A hospital coinsurance and all costs up to 365 days after Original Medicare benefits are exhausted
- Part A hospice care coinsurance or co-payment
- Part A deductible
- Medicare Part B preventive care coinsurance coverage
- Part B coinsurance or co-payment coverage
- Part B excess charges
- First three pints of blood for a medical procedure
- Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) care coinsurance coverage
- Foreign travel emergency coverage
CRITICAL: Most plans do not pay for your Part B excess charges, but Plan G does. This could be important if you use a doctor or specialist who does not accept Medicare Assignment. Ask your insurance agent to help you weigh the benefits of Medicare Part B deductible coverage vs. Part B excess charges.
Eligibility to Buy a Medicare Supplemental Plan
Gerber Life Medicare Supplements are available to all approved Illinois Medicare beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare Part B. Beneficiaries turning age 65 have guaranteed issue rights and cannot be turned down. Additionally, Gerber Life can't cancel your policy, and must continue to renew it, for as long as you continue to pay the premiums and make no material misrepresentations.
