Can I get a Medigap Plan F or has it Gone Away?

As of January 1, 2020 the highly prized Plan F will be a thing of the past. It's being phased out as a cost-saving measure by the government. However, if you get a Plan F in District of Columbia now you can keep it. There are many opinions about how eliminating Plan F will save money. The general consensus is that seniors will go to the doctor less often if they have to pay out-of-pocket.

Join a District of Columbia Medicare Part D Plan for Rx Coverage

Supplements don't and can't cover your prescriptions. This is a change from years past. By law, supplemental insurance must cover what Original Medicare covers, and nothing more. The only exception is foreign travel coverage.

Here's the complete list of Medicare Prescription Drug Plans available in District of Columbia.

District of Columbia Medicare Supplement Plans are Standardized

The District of Columbia Department of Insurance and the federal government passed laws that require insurance carriers to standardize Medicare Supplement insurance. Plans must be identified as Medicare Supplement Insurance and plans must follow the state's standardized naming convention. Each standardized plan offers the same benefits. Only the monthly premiums, and how the premiums are calculated, may vary.

All supplements sold in District of Columbia offer the basic benefits of Plan A. All other plans include additional levels of gap coverage. This lets you to select the amount right coverage for your personal needs.

Each carrier decides which plans it wants to issue. State law mandates that:

  • Carriers are not required to offer every plan;
  • Carriers must offer Plan A (basic benefits); and
  • Carriers must also offer Plan C or Plan F.
