Is Medicare Supplement Plan F Going Away in Hawaii?

The highly prized Medigap Plan F is about to be a thing of the past. The government is forcing it out as a way to cut costs. The good news is that you can keep it if you have it. Will it actually cut Medicare cost in Hawaii? It's anyone's guess, but the theory is that seniors will use their doctor less often if they have to pay out-of-pocket.

in Hawaii Medicare Supplements Do Not Cover Prescriptions

In years past supplemental plans were allowed to offer prescription coverage. Not anymore. Today, supplements must be in lock-step with Original Medicare. If Medicare doesn't cover it, then supplemental insurance can't cover the gap. That means the only way to get help with prescriptions is through a Hawaii Medicare Part D plan.

Hawaii Medicare Supplement Plans are Standardized

The Hawaii Department of Insurance and the federal government passed laws that require insurance carriers to standardize Medicare Supplement insurance. Plans must be identified as Medicare Supplement Insurance and plans must follow the state's standardized naming convention. Each standardized plan offers the same benefits. Only the monthly premiums, and how the premiums are calculated, may vary.

Each lettered plan offers the basic coverage of Plan A. Plans B through N offer different levels of gap coverage, including some with annual out-of-pocket limits. This gives people significant range of choice based on the amount of insurance needed.

Carriers are free to market the the policies they want, with these simple limitations:

  1. Carriers are not required to offer every plan
  2. Plan A is mandatory
  3. Plan C or F must be offered
