Can I get a Medigap Plan F or has it Gone Away?
As of January 1, 2020 the highly prized Plan F will be a thing of the past. It's being phased out as a cost-saving measure by the government. However, if you get a Plan F in Louisiana now you can keep it. There are many opinions about how eliminating Plan F will save money. The general consensus is that seniors will go to the doctor less often if they have to pay out-of-pocket.
in Louisiana Medicare Supplements Do Not Cover Prescriptions
In years past supplemental plans were allowed to offer prescription coverage. Not anymore. Today, supplements must be in lock-step with Original Medicare. If Medicare doesn't cover it, then supplemental insurance can't cover the gap. That means the only way to get help with prescriptions is through a Louisiana Medicare Part D plan.
Louisiana Medicare Supplements are Regulated by Law
The Louisiana Department of Insurance and the federal government passed laws that require insurance carriers to standardize Medicare Supplement insurance. Plans must be identified as Medicare Supplement Insurance and plans must follow the state's standardized naming convention. Each standardized plan offers the same benefits. Only the monthly premiums, and how the premiums are calculated, may vary.
Each lettered plan offers the basic coverage of Plan A. Plans B through N offer different levels of gap coverage, including some with annual out-of-pocket limits. This gives people significant range of choice based on the amount of insurance needed.
Carriers are free to market the the policies they want, with these simple limitations:
- Carriers are not required to offer every plan
- Plan A is mandatory
- Plan C or F must be offered
