Can I get a Medigap Plan F or has it Gone Away?

In 2020 you will no longer be able to purchase a Medicare Supplement Plan F in Ohio. However, if you get a Plan F policy in Ohio now you will be able to keep it. These highly valuable supplemental plans are being phased out as a cost cutting measure for the government. The theory is that seniors will stop seeing their doctor if they have to pay out-of-pocket.

Join a Ohio Medicare Part D Plan for Rx Coverage

In years past supplemental plans were allowed to offer prescription coverage. Not anymore. Today, supplements must be in lock-step with Original Medicare. If Medicare doesn't cover it, then supplemental insurance can't cover the gap. That means the only way to get help with prescriptions is through a Ohio Medicare Part D plan.

Ohio Medicare Supplements are Regulated by Law

By law, all Medicare Supplements sold in the state of Ohio are standardized. This means that every policy must be clearly identified as Medicare Supplement Insurance and it must offer the exact coverage allowed. This allows all plans to compete on price (premium).

Each lettered plan offers the basic coverage of Plan A. Plans B through N offer different levels of gap coverage, including some with annual out-of-pocket limits. This gives people significant range of choice based on the amount of insurance needed.

Carriers are free to market the the policies they want, with these simple limitations:

  1. Carriers are not required to offer every plan
  2. Plan A is mandatory
  3. Plan C or F must be offered
