Medicare Supplemental Plan F is Going Away in 2020
The highly prized Medigap Plan F is about to be a thing of the past. The government is forcing it out as a way to cut costs. The good news is that you can keep it if you have it. Will it actually cut Medicare cost in South Dakota? It's anyone's guess, but the theory is that seniors will use their doctor less often if they have to pay out-of-pocket.
Join a South Dakota Medicare Part D Plan for Rx Coverage
In years past supplemental plans were allowed to offer prescription coverage. Not anymore. Today, supplements must be in lock-step with Original Medicare. If Medicare doesn't cover it, then supplemental insurance can't cover the gap. That means the only way to get help with prescriptions is through a South Dakota Medicare Part D plan.
South Dakota Medicare Supplements are Regulated by Law
The South Dakota Department of Insurance and the federal government passed laws that require insurance carriers to standardize Medicare Supplemental insurance. Plans must be identified as Medicare Supplement Insurance and plans must follow the state's standardized naming convention. Each standardized plan offers the same benefits. Only the monthly premiums, and how the premiums are calculated, may vary.
All supplements sold in South Dakota offer the basic benefits of Plan A. All other plans include additional levels of gap coverage. This lets you to select the amount right coverage for your personal needs.
Each carrier decides which plans wants to issue. State law mandates that:
- Carriers are not required to offer every plan;
- Carriers must offer Plan A (basic benefits); and
- Carriers must also offer Plan C or Plan F.
