In 2020 you will no longer be able to purchase a Medicare Supplement Plan F in Virginia. However, if you get a Plan F policy in Virginia now you will be able to keep it. These highly valuable supplemental plans are being phased out as a cost cutting measure for the government. The theory is that seniors will stop seeing their doctor if they have to pay out-of-pocket.

Supplements don't and can't cover your prescriptions. This is a change from years past. By law, supplemental insurance must cover what Original Medicare covers, and nothing more. The only exception is foreign travel coverage.

Virginia Medicare Supplemental Plans are Standardized
By law, all Medicare Supplements sold in the state of Virginia are standardized. This means that every policy must be clearly identified as Medicare Supplement Insurance and it must offer the exact coverage allowed. This allows all plans to compete on price (premium).
All supplements sold in Virginia offer the basic benefits of Plan A. All other plans include additional levels of gap coverage. This lets you to select the amount right coverage for your personal needs.
Each carrier decides which plans wants to issue. State law mandates that:
- Carriers are not required to offer every plan;
- Carriers must offer Plan A (basic benefits); and
- Carriers must also offer Plan C or Plan F.
