There are currently no statutory provisions in the Social Security Act to govern what would happen if Medicare were unable to pay its bills. Insolvency is defined, however, as not being able to pay 100 percent of costs. If 2024 forecast projections were to occur, taxes and revenues associated with the Hospital Insurance (HI) Trust Fund would be enough to cover 90 percent of HI???s projected costs.
