Medicare coverage began on July 1, 1966. All people aged 65 and older were automatically covered under Medicare Hospital Insurance (Part A). Medicare Medical Insurance (Part B) coverage also began for those seniors who signed up for the voluntary plan. More than 19 million people aged 65 and older enrolled in Medicare at the start. The Part A deductible was $40 per year. It cost participants $3 per month for the Part B premium.
